Configure Telnyx
Choose Direct Calling for a simpler one-to-one setup, or Multi-party Calling when users need to invite additional participants.
ChartHero can use Telnyx for either ordinary one-to-one calls or calls that may grow to include several participants. Pick the mode before creating provider resources: a Direct Calling connection cannot be converted into Multi-party Calling in ChartHero.
Choose a calling mode
| Direct Calling | Multi-party Calling | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | One-to-one calls | Calls where users may invite additional participants |
| Availability | Personal or organization connections | Organization connections |
| Telnyx resources | Credential Connection | Dedicated Credential Connection and Voice API Application |
| Call parking | Disabled | Enabled on the Credential Connection |
| ChartHero webhook | Not required for the direct connection | Required on both Telnyx resources |
| Setup effort | Lower | Higher |
| Provider cost | Lower platform-leg cost | Additional platform leg initially; conference pricing after another participant is added |
Use separate Telnyx Credential Connections if your organization needs both modes. Do not enable Park all outbound calls on a Direct Calling connection; Multi-party Calling requires it.
How Multi-party Calling works
The initial call uses two coordinated Telnyx resources. The Credential Connection carries the ChartHero browser participant, while the Voice API Application creates and controls the outbound destination leg. When the user adds another participant, ChartHero promotes the call to a Telnyx conference so that all participants can join the same call.
This means Multi-party Calling has an additional Telnyx platform leg even before a second destination is invited. It is useful to think about the provider costs in two phases:
- Initial call: browser/app calling plus the Voice API leg, in addition to the applicable SIP/PSTN destination charge.
- After promotion: Telnyx conference pricing applies per participant, while the applicable underlying call-leg charges continue.
At the listed rates, the fixed Telnyx platform-leg portion of the initial Multi-party call is therefore twice the Direct Calling platform-leg portion: two $0.002-per-minute platform legs instead of one. The total call price is not necessarily exactly double because destination-specific SIP/PSTN charges vary.
At the time this guide was updated, Telnyx listed browser/app calling and outbound Voice API usage at $0.002 per minute each, plus applicable SIP Trunking fees. Conference usage was listed at $0.002 per participant per minute. These are provider charges, not ChartHero prices, and Telnyx can change them. Confirm current rates on the Telnyx Voice API pricing page and Telnyx SIP Trunking pricing page before estimating total cost.
Set up Telnyx
Keep the resources for development, staging, and production separate. Use environment-specific names and the callback URL shown by the target ChartHero environment.
